Trains run to Karviná from two opposite directions – either from Bohumín or Český Těšín. Next to the railway station is the bus station, which serves town buses, local routes and long-distance coaches. Karviná can be reached by car from Ostrava (about 30 km) either via Petřvald and Orlová or through Doubrava and then another 15 km from Český Těšín to Karviná via Chotěbuz. Coming from Ostrava, turn right at the first set of traffic lights (at the ice stadium), then left after 50 m into the central car park under the Prior department store. From there it is about 250 m to the chateau on Masaryk Square. Coming by car from Český Těšín, go straight on through the roundabout at the Tesco store and carry straight on through four sets of traffic lights. Turn left at the fifth set of lights and left again into the central car park under the Prior department store, about 250 m away from the chateau. You can reach the town centre – Fryštát – from the train and bus stations on buses 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10 (‘OD Prior’ stop) or on foot via Polní and Ostravská streets, turning right at the ice stadium and up Svatopluka Čecha street (about 1250 m in total from the stations). Visitors from Poland can reach Karviná via the Marklovice border crossings in Petrovice u Karviné (3 km from the town centre), Český Těšín (15 km from Karviná), Chotěbuz or Bohumín (20 km following signs to Karviná). Polish citizens can walk, cycle or drive to Karviná via the crossings in Karviná-Ráj or Petrovice-Závada u Karviné. The nearest airport is at Mošnov near Ostrava.
